CDC Updates Guidelines for Healthcare Providers Treating Ebola Patients

On Monday, October 20, CDC Director, Thomas Friedman, announced new guidelines for healthcare workers involved in the treatment of patients infected with the Ebola virus. The announcement came after increasing criticism that the previous guidelines were too lax, and that two Dallas nurses who treated Ebola-infected patient, Thomas Eric Duncan, may have become infected as a result.

Among other changes, the updated guidelines call for all bare skin to be covered, increased training in putting on and removing personal protective equipment, and additional gear, such as double gloves, boot covers, and respirators.

The new guidelines can be found on the CDC’s website here, and on Ohio ACEP’s Ebola News & Resources page: www.ohacep.org/Ebola
